Every face fits into a simple grid of
a few lines. Unassuming, elegant
markers map the space of each
feature like a constellation, yet
each face is equisitely different.
Each person shines unmistakably
through their own eyes. A solitary
person is at once alone and the
image of us all. The subject, the
artist and the viewer are revealed
through the mathmetical eqations
of a seemingly lifeless grid. That
astonishes me. That is my
definition of beauty.
It is my belief that on a fundamental
level we are all interconnected. When
we get down to the tiniest parts of our
makeup, like atoms or quarks,  there is
no discernable difference between me,
you and the space between us. The
difference is only in the illusion. I see
my own reflection in the eyes of
others, and their very being imprints
on me. Each person is the mirror of
another and individual at once. They
say there are seven wonders of the
world. I say there are
billions. A
single face holds the magnificence
of a Grand Canyon and grandeur
of a night sky. Lips speak of
mysteries and eyes reveal untold
galaxies of wonder, but doubtless
the faces I see also reveal part of
me.
There is no place more
sacred than to be invited into
the space of another's eyes.
I arrive unarmed, naked and
surrendered, or it's best not
to come. If I cannot be seen,
I cannot see. We stand on
hallowed ground. Respect is
the cornerstone of my
painting process.  One by
one, pieces of the light and
shadow puzzle come
together, until I'm am looking
into those eyes that look so
deeply into me. Strokes of
my brush touch skin that
responds. Eyes glisten with
turpentine tears and lips
blush with warmth. I sense
the breath of their
beingness, and I come more
to life. As I paint them, so do
they paint me.
I choose classical realism
to portray people, because
I could imagine no image
that would be more
beautiful than that which I
plainly see. These people,
these inherent works of art
are my figures and
landscapes to render. Their
slopes and hills become my
world of discovery. They
are miracles of protons and
neutrons with a spark of
life. My yearning is to
follow that life that I can
only render.... to catch the
glance of a fleeting
moment when I saw
something of my own being
in the eyes of another.
